Wrong Rego Number on Parking Infringement ticket I received???

Hey guys,

I left my car on a NO STOPPING zone for couple of minutes in front of a 7/11 store last saturday morning to get some drinks on the way to my tennis badge.

Today I received a Penalty notice for "Disobeying No Stopping Sign" and it cost $201!!!
BUT the Rego number printed on the ticket is wrong. The last digit of it is off. The car make, colour and model are correct. (I have seen a similar car to mine with 1 digit diferent on the rego from mine)

Now, do I have a chance on not paying this fine since the Rego No is wrong?
Will it be dissmissed if I don't pay since its not my rego number?

But the thing is, this letter came to my address which they obviously found this out from my car rego but I don't think they took any pictures of my car/rego otherwise the ticket would've been left on my windscreen. Could it be someone wrote down my rego and gave it to council?

Should I ring the SDRO and tell them that there is no car with that Rego on my address?
Is this penalty ticket valid?

What would you do?

Cheers

i'd argue the point, as that document would be a legal form, and it hasnt been correctly filled out. you should be able to get out of it, hey if gang rapists can get away with it cause a staple wasnt there, then you should be able to get away with them writing the wrong number plate down

Write a letter and explain the sittuation that the details are incorect!

I know that with speeding fines they have to be absolutely correct, even if one thing is wrong you cant be fined! Its a "techinicality" that i know alot of people have used to get out of them!

Not sure bout parking fines but the wat i see it if the details are incorrect its there ****up not urz, tho it could hit sumone else if not rectifyed

??? - but Duddy has admitted he did stop in a no stopping area so he is guilty?

Not worth fighting mate - hatchback is a sedan in the registration system as I have one and that is how my papers come out.

You won't win and it will cost you more than $201 and your pride to take them on.
even though they may have a 1 character mismatch in the fine papers, if it comes to court, you would still have to admit guilt and fight them on a technicality....in that case, good luck!

If you weren't going to admit guilt, you'd either have to sign a stat dec or stand up in court and lie, in which case you are committing perjury and would stand to lose more than $201 if you were caught out.....and probably enjoy some jail time.

If you genuinely didn't stop there and it was someone else, then different story.

Cheers,

Steve

this hapened to me 8 months ago,i did not have to pay as it is up to them
to prove it was your car, not for you to prove it was not your car.
if they can't say 100% it's your car dont pay it,
just take it back to them and say NOT MINE.
cheers.

"ĂŹf the Paperwork is Incorrect, not complete, It is Not Valid." That is why we are always told to Dot every I and cross every T. If they cant get the simple details correct, what else do they have wrong?

Fight it, if the rego number is wrong, how can they prosecute you?
Make them be accountable for their own mistakes, Councils and Govt Authorities reap millions in penalties every year, they should be beyond reproach when issuing a penalty notice.

If the fine arrived in his mailbox its safe to assume they have the rego details correct in their system regardless of what the infringment notice says

If he rocks up to court and admits he parked illegally he will still lose and have to pay court costs

Pay the fine

Cheers

Play dumb... go back to them saying that you have a vehicle of similar description, but the rego number on your vehicle is different, and it is a hatch not a sedan. Ask them what YOU should do. Do not admit anything at this point.

One of 2 things will happen.

1. They will issue a new and correct infringement... POW... you'll need to pay that.
2. They will drop it.

I am aware of a number of people that have avoided fines because the infringement notice was incorrect. I also know a few that were issued with corrected notices. You don't have to "fight it" or "take it to court"... just question it.

Bottom line is, you're guilty, so if you receive a corrected notice, you are no worse off.

Sounds to me like there was a typo at the processing end for the RTA.

If you got the penalty notice, I imagine they would have got your details from your rego. No one could write down your rego and get you fined for it. Otherwise, you could get anyone fined whenever you wanted to...

I am unsure of NSW, but in QLD the rent-a-cops have to take a photo of the car on their PDA to go along with the fine.

As suggested above, I would respond to the RTA and query the fine - as the rego number is not yours (albeit only missing one digit).

The best that can happen, is they will drop it. The worst that can happen is they lock you in a cage hanging from the wall in the middle of town so the general public can throw things at you......

I doubt either of those will happen, but most likely something in the middle.

The main point is - DO NOT ACCEPT LIABILITY (like you did in your original post)!!! If it comes down to it, suggest to them you didn't see the sign, and pay the updated fine.

I am not going to fight it as I admit that I am guilty :)
I am just trying to see if I can avoid this penalty using their mistake!

I think I will email them and tell them that I don't have a vehicle with that Rego Number period!
or
Wait to see if the reminder letter turns up. If the reminder letter done automatically, will it go to the owner of the rego printed on the ticket?

More info

My car is VW GOLF GTI
on the ticket is VW Sedan and correct colour.

Yes if they send me correct ticket I will pay it for sure but it WORTH trying to avoid it and see if they can correct their mistake. Remember guys they have fined innocent people and they can't correct their mistake so hopefully this time it goes against them :)

When it comes to the law, I never assume.

On principal alone, and all guilt aside, we must insist on the Authorities getting it 100% right Every time, the half arsed attitude of close enough is good enough just doesnt do it for me.

A Fine is a legal document, and must be 100% correct in every detail, if it is not, the fine becomes invalid, guilt or innocence have nothing to do with it.

I doubt this would ever get to court, send a letter to the council stating that the rego number of the vehicle cited on the ticket does not match the respondants vehicle, and the council will have no option but to recind the fine.

If the ticket came to you in the mail why would the reminder go somewhere else ?

If they jotted down your rego incorrectly then they have obviously found the correct details before sending it to you

As suggested they may have taken a photo which will still be used as evidence regardless of what the notice says

Good luck with disputing it, let us know what happens

Cheers

The correct rego number is handwritten on the envelope the ticket came in. The ticket itself has got incorrect rego printed on it. So I would think that if the reminder letter is done automatically it will be based on whats printed on the ticket NOT on what handwritten on the envelope??

Re : Camera, I was only inside the store to get the drinks and I didn't see any parking officer there and if they were, wouldn't they put the ticket on my windscreen? I think someone there has reported it to the council and council typed it wrong on the ticket ..... who knows.

Its quite interesting to see where it ends. I am prepared to pay the fine but it worth trying to avoid it.
PS : I am not disputing it ... just tying to avoid it if that makes any difference :)

I am not going to contest it, I will just wait until they send me the ticket with my rego printed on it. They couldn't penalise me for not paying the ticket sent to me with somebody else rego on it right??

FYI, if you see the car identical to yours, check the rego number, most of them will be very close to yours. I have seen few other VW GOLF with one digit difference on the rego from mine.

The rego number printed on the ticket belongs to somebody else.

I will pay when I receive the right ticket but I will not contact them and tell them that they send me a ticket with wrong rego on it. Let them figure it out themselves :)

Almost any ticket you get to your address is issued on a photo that has been taken by a inspector just driving by, they dont even get out of the car anymore out my way ( south eastern melbourne ) i see them around schools at pick up time, they drive by take a snap then come around again 10 minutes later and snap again with cars parked in a 5 minute pick up zone, the camera must have a time and date on it so they can prove you over stayed your 5 minutes, seen this many times when picking my kids up, two words come to mind LAZY P______S
