Putting aside the ramblings of two of our members (Skidd and Peter... not you Woolly), I would like to remind everyone that the Coffs Harbour funfly is THE HELI EVENT for AUSTRALIA every year.

It is getting massive numbers of pilots attending and there is never any shortage of top quality pilots that put on some awesome demonstrations, through to blokes like Pete who can offer the absolute beginner advice, setup assistance and Proficiency Testing.

If you can get there, you will not be disappointed.

[Skidd searching for an excuse]

Hey, I thought we were doing you a favour by keeping the topic active so everyone gets reminded about it.

[/excuse]

But Skidd

It would cost you about $1472189012.98 in fuel in that monster truck of yours wouldn't it?

glenni

With unleaded hitting $1.50 this week that figure would be about right... I'm hoping that Peter will take pity on me and the cost of getting there and offer me the "deal of the century" on his Westlan Wessex. :p

I'm looking for as many reasons as I can to convince the RSM Home Command to give me a leave pass, so far I've come up with;
  1. Give me a chance to improve my eye hand co-ordination,
  2. Get the opportunity to be assessed for my Bronze Heli wings,
  3. Pick up the bargin of the century deal on a Westland Wessex, and
  4. Clock up some required FBT milage on the vehicle.
OK seriously, I'm done pestering you now.
Skidd, it seems like you need to practice some good old "sucking up" proceedures. The 4 reasons you've given your Home Commander seem pretty crook if you ask me. I'm no expert on these matters, and I will never, ever, say that I understand how a Home Commander's mind operates.

After 37 years of taking orders from the same Commander, all that I have really understood, is that the rules of "engagement" rarely change: Her way or the highway!

See, your 4 given reasons are all pointing to you. Nothing to appease the Commander. I would have thrown in something like:
* I'll bring you back a new dress/ jewellery/ helic... oops
* When I book the accomodation for Coffs, I may as well book (insert favoured getawy place) for (insert favoured date) at the same time. We might get a discount.
... * and as a last resort, I promise to wash up/ cook/ mow the lawn/ visit your Mum.....( you know the drill).

Good luck with your choice of attack. I hope you have a successful recon for the pending mission! If all else fails, start a hell of a fight a day before due departure, and she'll be pleased to see the back end of you! It's cheaper too.

But I don't have to worry, because it's only a tad over an hours drive from here. So I'll be definitely be at Coffs for a sticky beak.

.... and I bet you can't stop pestering Peter about the WW! ;)

Woolly, you missed the subtle bit, the 'eye hand co-ordination' was for her benefit. Maybey I could twist the 'picking up a bargin in the WW' to her benefit by pointing out all the extra money shed have to spend on shoes... but obviously I'd need Peter's assistance in that regard. :D

Seriously though....

Coffs is one of our favourite places and we've spent our holidays there a few times now.

I have a weekend job training at the local TAFE and this is the first time that the events falls on a weekend that I'm not working. I'll be working for the 12 weekends leading up to that one and luckily the weekend of the event is the first of three that I have before my next course starts.

I'm currently working through some options with RSM Hm Cmd, looking at either working the trip into a family break or heading for Brisbane with me tripping down for the event.

Either way, I'm tap dancing to make it happen.

Great stuff Skidd
I am about to update the first post so stay tuned
Taaa Daaa Done !
OK, so now the motel is booked and the work trip all lined up so it looks for all money like I'm on board.

I guess I'd better start getting my heli into flying shape... hope those parts are in the mail Glenni!
Yer it's shaping up to be a big one. Over 50 coming for sure and I estimate another 20 on top of that.
Only 5 weeks away now.
OK, I'm on the road and heading North... currently camped about 5 hours the Melbourne side of Sydney. I hope I'm going to see some of those elusive Brisbane boys at this event.

Glenni, you'll be please to know I've already spent $2148.87 of the $1472189012.98 allocated for fuel on this trip. See ya tomorrow mate.

Don't you intend to return to Melbourne Skidd? With a fuel budget of only $1472189012.98, you'll be lucky to get halfway home, specially if you're driving the GMC!

LOL... and to top it off I'll be going up to Brisbane for a week after the Coffs event so I'll probably have to resort to coasting down the hills in neutral in an attempt to stay within budget.

I called in to see Glenn today and I'm now the proud owner of a Spectra G... but it's in bits!! Whudda thunk they come in a kit? Hey Glenn, Peter & Chris... I've got a project for ya'll this weekend. :D
Chris is wimping out this year , in NZ atm actually ... must love his promotion!!!:(

but there'll be enough of us there to empty the lemonade bottles as we watch and offer helpful advice as you build it .......

and then there's next week!!!!;)

Geez that really is a bugger! I know that work has to come first, but it sucks when such long existing plans get trashed.

What time/day are you getting there Pete?
hopefully mid arvo tomorrow should see us there ,,,,,,, if plans work out!!
Where actually is the field located??? Can't seem to see an address/location in this thread.

Also, would anyone have any idea what time you'd all finish tomorrow (Saturday 17th)? The child bride works tomorrow morning, and we might not be able to get there till late afternoon.

Still, there's always Sunday!
Its north of Coffs , about 13-15km I think , north of the zoo , (think its closed) ; the field is actually the Gun Clubs. Heading north its on the right .. Go past the field , should be signs out , do a u turn at the Emerald Beach turnoff .Emerald Beach turnoff is about 1 k north of the field. Give me a call on 0428717629 if you like!!

usually gone by 4.30 - 5 ish , gets dark early there !!! depends on how keen we are ! But call me!!!

I've never seen so many helicopters in the one place before! An RC heli oglers delight! And most of the pilot skills weren't too shabby either.

I managed to get to the field for a few hours on Sunday, and witness flying as I've never seen before. (Although I do leave a pretty sheltered existence living in "the bush"!) Also witnessed a couple of how do I say, "non controlled" landings. When the thumbs go "whacky", it doesn't take long for the thud.

It was great to finally meet a few faces, to connect with the AUSRC forum names. And I think Skidd is still drooling over Peter's Westland Wessex. A handbuilt rig around 30 years old, that still flies beautifully. I took a few photos, and a little footage, but as the home PC has also crashed, it could be a while before I can even sort through anything, let alone post it to the forum.

And good luck with the display cabinet Skidd. Have you settled on a 2.1 metre version, or do you think it will have to be the 6.7 model?

Great to finally catch up with you and yours Mr Woolly. These RC heli events are by their very nature a lot more controlled than the RC Car counterparts of the same number of participants. We had over 80 pilots and with only 5 flying positions it makes the wait for a empty piece of sky a bit longer than you would probably find at your local field.

It sure was a busy event and the competition for the flight line meant that I never actually got my heli in the sky, but it was good to catch up with some of the people from the various forums.

Peter and I will be in "discussions" over the future of his much hidden Wessex but at least I've now seen it with my own eyes.

See below.
