Well talk about excited! I just picked up my RC i have been dreaming about for ages! My fleet is now complete! I can ease up on the spending a wee bit for a couple weeks then its a OBR full mod and a few other bits and pieces for it like decent Transmitter to make the most of the telemtry, TR clutch housing, decent clutch and shroud, Ali chassis braces and a few "consumables" like diffs, axles, bearings, couplers and boots.
A huge thank you goes out to "Ellenbrook" for putting me onto it. Its a second hand truck with Losi pipe on it that was still in the box and has never even had fuel in the tank. It was an awesome score. $1900 worth of receipts and i paid $1300 for it.
I just fitted the Receiver out of my Trophy Truggy and got it all going with that receiver till I can buy a Spektrum for it. I put some gas in it and pulled it about four times and she fired into life with a hell of a racket i suppose thats what happens when you start it in the lounge though!
I cant wait to take it for a bash tomorrow!
Any guys out there got some good tips about first mods? Other than steering servo which again thanks very much to Ellenbrook i am picking up tomorrow a good solid Savox. One tip i have had which i think maybe you could try Ellenbrook is to adjust the end points on the braking servo so that it only just locks them up and it puts alot less load on the servo.
No pics yet sorry as im having alot of issues with my dam image shack account!
First upgrade....Photobucket is your friend in the pickie department
Servo you have covered, and setting the end points on the transmitter, so many forget this step.
Outerwares on the pull start, and air filter (Senad Filter would be better), flywheel outerwares is a good upgrade as well, it helps to keep small rocks and crud entering the back of the flywheel area and damaging the fins on the flywheel
Yeah i have seen that brake mod also. Looks like a good easy cheap mod to do. I actually already have the parts in my tower hobbies shopping cart LOL.
I have an outerwears cover on the airfilter, again thanks to Ellenbrook, hes a top bloke. The pull starter and flywheel cover? Are they not the same cover? I tried to setup an account with photobucket but it says my email address already has an account with them which is rubbish. I have been using image shack for over three years now and never had an issue in the past so i dont know what the problem is. I just put em on my facebook so ill upload them from there.
So im off tomorrow for a bash session. Gonna be a bloody shame to get it Dirty. This is the closest i have ever got to a brand new RC apart from my SCX10. All my others SUMMIT, SAVAGE, CEN GSR and TROPHY TRUGGY have all been good buys at seriously discounted low use second hand ones. Cant wait to start setting this up exactly how i want it! Heavier diff oil middle and rear to get it hanging its big heavy bum out as well as a motor with 8.2hp instead of 2.3hp.
Simon
Awesome....great to see you got it bud.
Ill get the brakes adjusted and fiddle with the steering during the week.
Will catch up with you later today....text my addy also
Im a very very happy new member! Im justg sitting down at the table now gazing at it, im supposed to be checking all the screws are tight but i just keep going over it finding new things that impress me, im an engineer by trade so get off looking at all the little details, all the amazing engineering that has gone into it. Its so so solid. I was looking at the HPI 5SC Flux for a while (as its RTR electric and i was dead set on electric till i started playing with my mates Baja) but then going over it at the shop you can clearly see its onlt a stretched out far bigger and heavier savage still running all the same drive train etc only difference is they run a CD, suspension arms, axles, knuckles they are all the same as the savage and i break those on my truck let alone having another 3 or so kilos on there cart wheeling down the road, i could see it in lots of pieces very quickly! Everything on the Losi is just massive compared to it!
Yeah cheers Steve i got that but was still half asleep haha. I have already adjusted my brakes just need to suss out some heavy diff oil now, ill just wait till im up in Karratha as i have some up there in my box of stuff. See ya this arvo.
Simon
Mate if your amazed by a losi then you'll be amazed 100 times more on a leopard lol
Screw the piston ported engines and go all out....either Trevor Simpson reed or obr reed engines and speak to Damien at rcbuggies for one....his 26mx and 30.5 full mod are absolute bonkers for what they are so you can imagine what a reedcase will be like
Here's a vid of my Leo and shortcuts 5t with a rooster tail 26mx and bartolone torpedo and I'm running the ambush racing 30.5 Trevor Simpson with a modified vrc pipe
Haha im a basher though not a racer and i really like the stadium truck style. I personally do not like the body shape etc of the leopard at all, i have seen that video before and it does go very very well.
I was more basing my comparisons against the Baja, Savage and Summit and other Rcs that i have owned and admired.
I took it down to a local park today and ran a couple tanks through it an Jeez does it go well. Suprisingly well for the size and weight of it with a little 26cc motor. The pipe seems to make a hell of a difference(and a hell of a racket) compared to other standard 5ive-Ts i have seen. It handles like a dream compared to the Baja i have been playing with. It also seems to accelerate and get off the line alot harder than other ones i have seen.
And yeah im not going to bother with piston ported motor. OBR 30.5 reed case with the 990 carb and velocity stack. I talked to the guys at OBR a few weeks ago about what pipe to run and they recommended the Losi pipe so thats good that i wont have to buy another one when i get the motor.
I have played with the Brake bias and got the rears locking up at about half brake and the fronts locking up at full brake so i can flick the brake and get the bum sliding out then power on to slide through the corner. Seems to be the best way to get the big girl round the corner. Gotta get some heaver diff oil for all the diffs i think. Go nice and heavy in the back to get the back end sliding out under power then i can bring the brake bias back to normal. I think ill go 30k front and 50k middle and 50k rear. Any opinions on these weights would be appreciated as i have never tuned Large scale diffs before but im assuming you would want to go a bit thinner than the 100k i use in my savage seen as they are bigger diffs. Ill be running in mostly low traction areas and 90% bashing only. I fitted a savox 2035 steering servo up to it this arvo and it is awesome. Thought i would replace the standard one before it gave up the ghost, atleast then i would have a spare if one of the others gives up.
Simon
The Losi needs to run the flywheel/crankcase outerware as well, small rocks and debris get pulled in through the back of the flywheels casing and ends up destoying fins on the flywheels as well as getting pushed through the motor.
Running both the flywheel and pull start outerwares nearly completely eliminates the problem, and with the Losi, it is an easy install for both.
I have looked at the RB innovations unit, and while I believe it has merit, think it may cause over heating by restricting the air flow to the fan (flywheel) due to completely blocking off the rear air intake for the engine.
If you get one, please let us know how it behaves and if the temps start to rise as a result.
Yeah i found the same thing steve, have had all the guards off numerous tiumes to clean it now, looks like ill have to get the cover for the cases as well. You would probably cry if you saw mine now haha its had a bloody hard couple of weeks lol. Just about time for a whole new body already. Did a good size jump the other day, got a good 3 meters high of air landed to the flat and kept going, not all of the attempts were quite so successful though. Jeez this truck can take a beating! I reckon RTR stock standard it is probably tougher than my savage was new.
I had the same thoughts as you towie re the RB unit, i cant really imagine that weeny filter would flow quite enough air to keep the motor cool but surely they have done there testing etc. Im in Karratha now though and its starting to warm up so i need all the airflow i can get!
Well a box of parts showed up today from DDM its my first order ever from them, another two should be showing up later this week i hope if not then early next week! Cant wait! This is the least exciting order but it came with the critical parts for Aussie running! Anyone guess which parts they might be? Hahaha
Also a quick snap of my work station all finally setup.
Haha nah very incomplete now i have decided! Making good money at the moment in Karratha so got a few more on the shopping list. SC8.2e Vorza and MT4 G3 but they can wait a bit! All good though there is still enough room on the shelves! The joys of been single and tight with everything apart from my toys haha!
Godles the full force parts are Shock boots and a Full screw and hardware kit, includes all major screws and some of the bearings that wear out quick!
The HPI bag is a spare clutch, its an 8000rpm one.
And sorry i cant comment on the springs as i havent run them yet. They are going to be too hard i think, i got a bit carried away when i ordered them but ill give them a run and see how they go. Will just use standard oil for now. Do you know what weight the oil is from the factory? I got 35 and 45 sitting there. Ill just run them with next to no preload.
I have alot more parts showing up probably later this week and next week and lots more to order next week when i get paid too haha. The large scale bug has well and truly bit! Im gonna pull my center diff down this arvo and fill with 60k to give the front driveshaft an easier life. Im thinking about maybe even going 100k. Ill be ordering the Darksoul turbine CD housing at some stage and maybe front and rear diff housings too. But next thing to be ordered will be the GFR dual servo tray and two more savox 235s.
I have a lipo on the way. Does anyone know if you can feed the receiver with the 7.2 volts from the lipo??
Cheers
Simon
What brand receiver. I know that Spektrums are good for up to 9.6V or something like that. they can easily take full 2S voltage but not sure on may others.
Hahaha ripped off i didnt get any!! Nah the parts necessary to this Aussie running is the 3 fliters lol got em all pre oiled and bagged up ready to go on my next bash, as even with outerwears on i would only get half to three quarters of a tank of gas before the airfilter would start to become too clogged! I just placed another big order with DDM! I wonder if ill get lollies this time??? Cant wait for the parts to all be here so i can fit them all.
The receiver im running is an HK one that can only take up to 6v. I know what your all thinking what you using that cheap rubbish radio for with something like this but i have used these radios on a couple of other RCs and had nothing but great sucess. As far as im concerned you dont need all that fancy whizz bang rubbish. Im only a basher and as long as its got reasonable range and turns left when i want and right when i want then im happy!
Can i run a BEC off the battery just to power the receiver cos i got a 5a CC BEC sitting here that was gonna go in my savage but have never got round to it so ill just use it for this!
Cheers
Simon
Thanks very much for that mate!! That will make my life alot easier when the time comes to do the wiring! I wonder where i hook my kill switch up in all that! Im sure ill be able to work it out.
I just spent an hour or so fitting the new springs, shockboots and ali chassis braces to my truck. Very happy with the TR braces lined up beautifully and very well made. Not so happy with the DDM top brace. Took a bit of mucking round to get it fixed. The holes and edeges were not in exactly the right place.
The shock boots very nice they finish it off nicely! Now the springs! These are a little disappointing but nothing major at all. They are supposed to be the hardest springs DDM has to offer they are supposed to be a matching pair they are both slightly harder than stock but the back ones not by very much at all, the arse still hangs down quite a bit so now i need to pull them back off wind a bit of preload on them and all will be good.
The front is a good height and sits nice i just need to get the back doing the same and considering they are a matching pair i thought they would be fairly well matched.
Heres a few pics of the braces and shock boots in place. Jeez photos make the truck look dirty haha!
A few more parts showed up today, five more packages to come.
I made another order at power slide racing. Jeez i wish i had known about these guys! It means i would not be waiting so long for parts to come from over seas. I took the losi for a good bash the other day and wiped all the fan blades off when a rock got in there so i decided a new motor was due sooner rather than later so i have an OBR 7.5hp TT motor on the way. So i fully stripped it down checking all the bearings etc. I only found one broken p[art a stripped thread in the steering arm where the link arm bolts onto the right hand bell crank. I didnt tear into the diffs as I have three ali diff housings on there way so ill do those properly when they get here but for now i just stripped the chassis right back, cos hopefully my CD housing, brace and carrier will be here early next week around the same time as my motor so i can get it all put together and have a play. Ill probably run 100k oil in the CD maybe 60k to start with actually and if thats not tight enough go up to 100k.
I love working on these big trucks they are alot of fun and nice and easy to pull to bits!
Now that i have bought all the parts for this one just waiting for them to arrive etc im contemplating whats coming next and im thinking another 5ive-T but this time electric and go all out with the motor and ESC Lehner motor and MGM comp ESC. For 20hp its cheaper than any gas powered alternative and you dont have to worry about things like clutches and carbs and air filters! Ill be finished paying my mate back in 4 weeks time so then itll be all on!
Simon
A quick comment to godles. I have had a fe good bashes now with the black springs. Im running 40w oil. No preload on the front springs and about 8mm preload(i wound about 14mm on to start with but this was too stiff) on the back and it handles extremely well. Can fly over serious bumps now without it upsetting the truck much at all. Less body roll and a bit more drift too which suits my driving style!
Cheers
Simon
Thanks Simon! that sounds like it'll suit my set up nicely
I like the goodies you have been collecting, except for the gasser related parts I can see a few things that I've already had delivered and a few that I plan to have ordered later on
Haha yeah i was real happy with the difference it made after been told putting firm springs in them upsets there good handling it improved it if anything!
Yeah im gonna have to do it all again soon with brushless version. I added it all up and its actually cheaper to go all out brushless with the Lehner motor and MGM controller than it is to go full mod gas. All the parts for gas motor add up real quick like filters clutch, housings, carriers, pipes, upgraded carbs, filters. Thats all good though i do want a gas one i just want a brushless one as well! Hahaha. Im away from home for my first Xmas ever so i think the new 5ive-T and associated hop ups and electric setup can be my Xmas present to myself!
Simon
Just found info on the Kershaw designs setup. Less than half the price and more power! 260amps continuous where the MGM one is only 250amps continuous. I know you get what you pay for but from what i have seen on the net these are a proven combo! Only 580 dollars for ESC and 2028 motor. I think this setup and use the saved money to buy the buggy conversion chassis will be the next project.
Simon
Another couple packages showed up yesterday so lots to do this weekend now!
Three more packages to go and all the bits for this build and quite a few for the next will be in my possesion!
I also confirmed the order today!! I bit the bullet and have on its way a MGM compro and Lehner motor! I want the non fan cooled version as i really need a sealed motor up here in the Dirty Karratha. Ill just run a tooth lower on the gearing and have to settle for 75mphinstead of 80mph haha, maybe knock up a heat sink with a couple of fans for the motor if the issue is still there.
A wee gripe though the modified RC center diff holder i bought comes with a bearing for the spur gear side of the CD that is machined down slightly to allow the outdrive to fit properly but this one was obviously not machined down enough so im buggered now i cant but my new diff carrier together! I have emailed them to see what they are going to do about it. Only a very small problem but it stops progress and when your paying top money for top quality parts cos you want top quality parts you expect that they will go together flawlessly.
