HPI are offering a factory upgrade offer

    http://www.hpiracing.com/factoryupgrade/

Says its only available for North American customers, interesting to see if the Aussie distributor has access to it

Guess if you actually do the sums it doesnt look that good

    $99 for an MMP

You could sell your Sidewinder for $40 and get the same for similar money

    Cheers

Castle are offering a similar thing.

And here is Castle Creations reply............

If you do not wish to have HPI warranty your Vapor Pro esc, you can send it into our facility here in the United States for an upgrade to the Max Pro for $80, including a new warranty and shipping. The Max Pro is not waterproof like the Vapor Pro, but should have no issues with the motor in the Savage XS on 3s.

I dont think Hpi's reputation would be as badly damaged as Castle's.

In reality, Castle are the manufacturer of the failed product, not Hpi.

Hpi made Castle an offer to purchase "X" amount of units, Castle saw the dollar figure and said yes, and supplied a product that cant handle the job it was designed to do.
I really think Castle need to rethink their business plan and stop doing discounted electrics just to make a dollar. The companies that want the parts either accept what Castle has to offer or Castle just refuse to supply under-rated products just to hit a retail point.
In this way, No one losses face and the end user gets a model that will live up to the promises it is marketed to make, and if the retail price of the model has to be increased to reflect the cost, so be it.

I would rather pay an extra few dollars and have a working model, rather than save a few bucks and look at it sitting in the corner broken.

Doesnt appear that either of them actually tested the electronics under bashing conditions

Just read on another forum that simply dropping in the real deal 3800 that temps dropped some 30 degrees

Surely the difference between motors could not have been more than $20 or so

Sure Towie, that is a possible scenario, but what if it was other way around? What if HPI came to Castle and said here is $80 per unit and not a cent more. Give us the best you can that will do. After all it is HPI that puts the final price figure on their product and it is also them that should have done all the testing. I work in automotive industry as you might know and it is not up to our suppliers to give us products that will perform. Rather it is up to us to do all the testing and torture that component to make sure it will work as it should. After all the customer that buys a car from us is handing over their hard earned to our company and not over to the suppliers of individual products.

I think that HPI tried doing this one on the cheap. Their agenda was to be cheaper or match the mini Revo in price. Deciding to use a larger and more powerful power system but on the cheap is whats bit them on the arse.

This isn't going to be good for either company but I still think that HPI will fare worse from this as the customers have paid their money to HPI and will expect them to do something. I am sure that HPI will sort this out soon as they are too big and too reputable of a company not to. Ideally I would like to see them put out a revision of the Flux XS with a MMP/3800 combo and give us one tough and a bad ass little truck that will cost a little more but perform just as well as the box states. If not even better than that.

Yeah, I have to agree with you BB, it would be nice for a change to see a model come out without a recall necessary, and one that is Bashproof without a shedload of hop ups.

I must say though, what would we tallk about then...oooh my model works....lol. I dont think we have too much to worry about though, the manufacturers in general are all trying to save a dollar, and we are the ginea pigs.
If they cant make it work, just release it and let us work it out, then do a recall and use the info the general public has already worked out.

I wonder how much of this is Walmart type economics, where the big distribution chains tell manufacturers they want something at a certain price point or the manufacturer is making something to a certain price point. In many ways the Savage XS seems more like an entry level consumer item rather than a mid to high end RC enthusiast specialty item.

$80 for an ESC that should have allready been in the car, still not a bad option I guess

Funny how Castle does not mention an upgraded version of the Sidewinder .................... All smoke and mirrors it seems !
