\r\n Sounds like yet another great idea to drive everyone out of the hobby With the state the US economy is in, can they really afford to cut OS business out of the picture anyway? I still won\'t be supporting the LHS regardless of if the big names stop shipping OS, so that\'s no win for them. Do you know the name of the distributer? I know it can\'t be horizon hobby as axial is no longer carried by them. Just need to know where to direct my hate mail
    \n
\nanf0, so you want to have to pay the 50-200% more $$$ at the LHS?

What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis? Screwed...

\nSounds like Aussie distributors trying to stop us rather than the US
    \n
\nGet rid of the distributor model all together I say
    \n
\nNo mention on Tower and I just did a dummy order and it went through fine
    \n
    \n
\nEven if something along those lines came in not hard to get around it
    \n
\nHave someone in the US buy it for you and post it (for a small fee) ............. problem solved

\nThey wont stop you buying from ebay, so just buy from ebay USA if the price is right.
    \n
\nSince taking to the sky I havnt ordered from either tower or amain, so really its not skin off my nose!

\nThe distributors for Hpi are different to the distributor for Axial and Traxxas. Hpi is licenced to Hobbies Australia and based in Newcastle.
    \n
\nThe agent that has just picked up Traxxas, and will only be carrying about 50 lines of stock at this stage, and yes there is paperwork in the processes of being served by Traxxas head office in Texas, to stop US retail/wholesalers selling to other countries.

\r\n I am sure that the Aussie distributors think this will make them more money but sadly I see a lot of them and hobby shops going out of business. No one will be prepared to pay the current overinflated prices that distributors demand and if there is no cars out there the local hobby shops will not be selling any parts neither. Seems very wrong to me.\r\n

\r\n BB, just looked at the spartan on amain and it said it would only ship to the US so its not just us that can\'t get it.
\nJust at a quick look it was the only traxxas vehicle that said that.\r\n

\r\n I wouldn\'t worry too much. The same thing happened a long time ago with high-end bicycles. Pretty much everyone in that sport buys parts from the UK. The aussie distributers have been trying for ages to stop the online stores with little success.\r\n

\r\n It is quite common for Manufacturers to specificy their goods can only be sold to a certain country. Foreign retailers will sell you the product; however, will not ship to an address outside the U.S for example.
\nThese are usually arrangments between the manufacturer and the importer, to protect their market share.
    \n
\nThere is a range of new companies, especially in the U.S. that for a small fee, will give you a postal address to send your purchase, then they will re-package the purchase and send it to your address.
\nwww.shipito.com is an example of these providers.
    \n
\nTowers and Amain couldn\'t care less where you live, if they stop shipping certain brands to Australia it is only because the manufacturer is threatening their supply if they dont comply. They will quite happily sell their products to you regardless of where you live, just have it shipped to a US address, like above, and no more problems.\r\n

\r\n Kyosho too. I tried buying some Kyosho gear of them and they said they can\'t although now it seems as it can be sent over. Who knows, it could be one of those things that just doesn\'t last. As someone said earlier it would be a stupid move on behalf of Traxxas and other US based manufacturers given the state of US economy.\r\n

\r\n Exactly. Mavic, a French company, are big on this in the bike world. You go to one of the big UK online stores and sometimes you can\'t ship to aus for a while. There\'s always some store that will happily ship it and if not plenty of eBay sellers will.

This I doubt. However, the manufacturer may be putting pressure on US retailers not to sell to Australia. As others have said, there will always be ways around it though. Once I complained to a US retailer about their refusal to ship brand X guitar strings to Australia, only to be told "just shoot us an email and we\'ll sort out something for you". As long as the manufacturer/wholesaler doesn\'t find out, they really don\'t care.
    \n
\nI\'m not sure on US laws, but in Australia it would be illegal behaviour for a wholesaler to withdraw supply from a retailer because they sell to other markets or at prices far below RRP. It is quite valid for the wholesaler to refuse to deal with a retailer because they dislike them though, so it can be difficult to prove the first case.
    \n
\nI boycotted brand X guitar strings anyway - there were plenty of other excellent makes around that don\'t engage in market protection. I\'d suggest that if you\'re choosing between brands, go for the one that doesn\'t exhibit anti-competitive practices. If you have the choice, boycott the others. Parts support in this hobby is often hard to get locally anyway (and let\'s face it, this was the way of things long before the Internet gave us so many other choices), so we need to know that we can get our bits from overseas if necessary.\r\n

Dont know about this, think about xbox and playstation basiclly Sony and Microsoft determine the price that xbox and playstation sell for within a couple of dollars so bascially all retailer are very similar in price depending on the deal they have worked out with their supplier.\r\n

\r\n Same with DVD/Blu-ray which have region protection built in to the product. Market segmentation and regional protection has been around as long as first international mail delivery so it\'s not going anywhere any time soon.\r\n

\r\n Suspect the margin is pretty low on those items anyway, so not a whole lot of room for retailers to discount. The info I had was advised to a friend by ACCC. Specifically it was around pricing, and distributors/manufacturers refusing to deal with a retailer because they price stock too low (protecting margins). The wholesaler/manufacturer cannot refuse to deal with the retailer because the retailer does not meet price requirements, but they can refuse to deal based on other reasons (eg...simply "we don\'t like you, so we won\'t supply you"). So, the rules are next to useless unless the supplier has been silly enough to put on the record that they won\'t supply the retailer because the retailer isn\'t selling at the right price.
    \n
\nEdit: I should say that this is domestic regulation. My original thought though was that in Australia at least, I don\'t think it would be possible to slap a lawsuit on retailers for selling items to the US - they have the freedom to sell to whomever they wish at whatever price they choose (excepting loss leading). My feeling is that surely the US offers similar protections to US retailers? I guess there\'s plenty of evidence pointing to anti-competitive practices like this over there. Not in the public interest for the US though surely.

\r\n I agree with the above comments.
    \n
\nI used to work retail when I was younger, supermarkets in fact.
    \n
\nWe were trained, expected, and wanted to give great customer service, we had to know the products, the store, and be able to answer any question the customers asked. And if we didn\'t know we were trained, expected and wanted to go and find out then go and find the customer to advise them.
    \n
\nI walk around most supermarkets/retail outlets these days and I\'m gobsmacked at how "meh" everyone seems to be. Don\'t get me wrong, there\'s good and exceptional people around but they aren\'t the norm like when I was doing that job.
    \n
\nWe went through a period of getting groceries home delivered. I works well but we decided to start shopping ourselves again.
    \n
\nAs for hobby stores. I pay the extra because of the service, the fact most times I can have it that day rather than a week out, and the fact I can pick things up, prod them, poke them, ask questions about them...
    \n
\nThings I won\'t buy from the LHS includes batteries (eg $150 for a 3cell lipo versus $120 for three including 3day shipping) and cables etc (like parallel charging leads for $1.15 or battery adapters for $2)

Or things like screws and bolts, pack of 10 LHS 10 bucks, anywhere else 1 buck. Someone tell me that any LHS is not screwing people on these items. As for the distributors or Axiel products in Aust, they are a total joke, total imports for the Wraith, 20, total imports on a new HPI drifter soon to be released, 20. So i was told by a LSH in Brisbane. No wonder we are screwed for prices, the distributor has no buying power.\r\n

Like you I was trained in retail, which was a long time ago, back then, employers wore the cost of that training, and we were expected to do our research as well, not that we had a lot of places to look, the internet didnt exist and computers were things that only large corporations and govt departments had.
    \n
\nAfter a couple of months, we were expected to be able the majority of customer questions and be able to transact most sales without help, and we were proud when we completed a sale on our own, esspecially if it was a large one, like a house load of electrical. Today it seems the young ones working the floor dont have the same drive to succeed and sales jobs are considered lack lustre, so no need to put any effort in.
    \n
\nThe other point that comes to mind with sales people these days, most seemed to be trained in the art of people categorizing (looking at the outward appearance to ascertain the monetary wealth of a person), I find this to be a highly overated skill that not many are actually any good at. A typical example would be, me when I go shopping, I go out dressed down, so as not to appear affluent, I find the shop assistants overlook me regularly because of this and let me alone to look at what I want, until I approach them for assistance in making a purchase.

I do believe that alot of this comes from the fact that packages are now taking alot longer to make it to australian addresses which in turn lots of people have been complaining after paying for faster shipping and there item does not arrive with in there shipping times and the large companies like tower and Amain are refunding the shipping cost to the customers making it hardly worth dealing with the over seas customers.
    \r\n \r\n
    \r\n
    \r\n
Funny you should say that, as I ordered a small bag of parts from LA Partshouse Back in mid-July, and they just arrived yesterday, right after Angie from LAP had processed a refund for me (I\'ve gotta say, while it was a small order, I was impressed at their friendly and prompt service). She said they\'d had a lot of complaints from Australian customers recently. We also took delivery of an express package from the US today - normally would take a week, but in this instance it was just over 2 weeks.
    \n
\nHow much stuffing about from shipping companies would US stores be prepared to take before they throw up their hands and say "uh sorry, it\'s just easier if we don\'t send things to Australia"? Well, hopefully that won\'t happen :-(
    \n
\nNot sure why the delays at the moment. I\'ve heard that air freight space from US to Oz is tight right now. Not sure if USPS uses QANTAS, but they\'ve cut back on routes too. Obviously we\'re buying more from US with the high dollar too, so there must be some extra demand. Maybe a number of factors.\r\n

\r\n I\'m still waiting on an A-Main order that was sent on the 16/08/11..... Other Tower and A-Main orders have been sent and recieved since then. I have had problems before with Tower not putting full address details on packages and they said that I would have to wait 60 days to file a lost parcel claim. Fast forward to my current problem and A-Main have already said if it gets to the end of this week they will resend the parts and file a lost parcel claim. We\'ll wait and see but so far A-Main is way ahead of Tower for lost parcels so far. This is the first time in Three odd years it has taken so long to get stuff sent. \r\n

\r\n I find it hard to believe that US suppliers will not sell thier product with thier market the way it is. Hence the new australian dealer, from what I understand, the new dealer has approached many ozzy retailers with deals like 40% of traxxas stuff which used to be exclusive to 1 distributor in oz. If you look at Traxxas stock in the LHS, it will be coming down, some are slashing the price just to get rid of old stock bought at +40% prices. And get this, the original supplier can all of the sudden afford to take a 40% hit to match the new mob (yeah right more like 40% less pure profit). I believe US sellers are selling thier product to whoever will take it, I see mention of the spektrum radio thing here, amain would not allow them to be sold to oz because of some radio frequency standard that did not apply to oz, much like buying a US motorcycle helmet without the adr sticker is not legal to use in oz. I don\'t think we will have anything to worry about.
    \n
\nP.S, I have an amain order on the way done on the 31st (US) so it hadnt happened yet....\r\n

\r\n I can\'t see the distributors lowering prices if they had more customers from people buying within Australia as Anfo says to do.
\nIf people are buying what they\'re selling at the current prices instead of going for the cheaper option then why change it? This would be their though process:
    \n
\nGuy 1 "Hey we\'ve got a heap more people buying our stuff in Australia finally, so we\'re making heaps more money"
\nGuy 2 "maybe we should drop our prices to match the USA then?"
\nGuy 1 "um why? They\'re already buying from us and we\'re making heaps more money"
    \n
\nAs for customer service, some stores are worth it.
\nAt my work I do as much as I can for EVERY customer.
\nIf they bring in the car to get a basic part fitted (lord of kid/parent customers) I\'ll also do stuff like:
    \nNeaten up the wiring.
\nClean and Re oil the air filter if needed.
    \nClean the whole car.
\nCheck suspension and let customers know if a rebuild is in order.
\nCheck the tune and adjust if necessary.
\nReplace any worn screwed that I come across.
    \n
\nAnd I normally just charge for the part they came in for, sometimes they ask me to do a rebuild or fix something else when I let them know the car/buggy needs it.
    \n
\nIf possible I\'ll even show the kid how to fix it himself so he can do it next time.
    \n
\nCustomers come back and never complain.\r\n

\r\n could be a blessing in disguise, means aussie shops could get more competitive to each other, and whats to stop a-main doing a hobbyking and opening a shop in australia (since he\'s australian he bloody better do it )
    \n
\nwho here shops around for the cheapest price, ie looks on ebay ( sorts cheapest first) does a dummy order to tower, amain ect its normal to wanna get things cheaper, we\'ve all earned our money, and the more u save the more u can buy
    \n
\ntill then, i will buy from overseas or where ever is cheaper\r\n

    THIS.
    \n
\nThere is only one way to lower prices and that is competition, when you have only one supplier in a market, it does not matter what the demand is, he can set whatever price he thinks he can screw the market for. Have 2 suppliers who are selling the same product and watch the deals come in, not only will they try and out sell each other, but they will also compete for better deals with manufacturers so they can sell more for less with a better profit margin then the other guy.
    \n
\nOne only needs to look at what it happening to book retailers in this country to see the truth of this. Book retailers are not going under because people no longer buy books, it is because there is no competition in the supply side in Australia to drive prices down. Thus consumers have voted with their wallets and buy their books from Amazon or from the UK because there is strong competition in supply which has made their books much cheaper.
    \n
\nSo until the protectionist laws that are the cause of this mess are changed so that Aussie retailers can compete on an even playing field with the rest of the world, my money will go to whomever can offer me the best deal and the LSH will be used when i want something now, or advice and support or when they can offer a comparable deal.\r\n
