simple charger question from a dummy

i continuously hear everyone talk about what charge rates they use on their different batteries. I have notcied that everyone only mentions the amperage figure. why does no one mention what output voltage the charger is set to? or is this irrelevant?

in other words, if i were to charge a 6v 1200maH venom RX battery, do i HAVE to have a charger with output of 6V or can it be well over/under this mark? is the amperage the only important thing?

lancer8u,

If you have a charger that comes with the battery it will charge to the
correct level, usually 10% greater than the battery rating..

If you have an automatic charger or electronic charger, generally you
tell it what current to charge the battery at and it will charge the
battery until it cannot charg it anymore, without damaging the
battery..

For example your 6V 1200Mah battery on my swallow advance charger I
would charge at 2.5Amp (2500Mah) it would be complete in about 30
minutes, but the resulting charge in the battery would be between 6.5v
and 7.2v.. This is not detrimental to the battery because this is a
peak charge, after 5 minutes of operation the battery would be
supplying a sustained charge of about 6 volts..

So voltage for the charger is important if it is a fixed voltage
charger, don't connect your 6v battery to a 7.5v charger, but if you
have a peak charger, it's not uncommon for the charger to peak the
battery 10%~15% higher than the battery rating..

Cheers,
