: Losi LST meets Savage PICS

REVREX
29-08-2004, 03:43 PM
Well the big get together happened this afternoon at Kilsyth BMX
track. The Genesis didn't make it but a number of Savage owners
came out to check the Losi in action. Modesty prevents me from
reporting all the 'oohhs and aahhs' from the die hards. https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gif
I even heard one Savage owner say, "I gotta get a Losi". https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif
Seems the truck was considered good… perhaps too good!https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif

So the Savage boys got their heads together about how to stop me
tearing up the track if they were gonna break out their tricked up,
modified, HPI's and not be embarrased by a stock Losi! https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley18.gif

So they got their biggest, meanest truck, with the biggest meanest
driver (Skidd) to front end me at high speed! https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif

Both trucks going flat out, me having 'right of way' by popular
consent in the lively discussion later.
POOR LOSI 'https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif'

https://www.ausrc.com/forum/members/images/REVREX/BROKEN.jpg
Broken top and bottom A-arms (got spares)
Broken Shock shaft (got spares)
Broken servo link (aint got spares)

I will send Skidd the bill.
Watch out for him if you are on the same track https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif Edited by: REVREX

Tell you truth the savages were having some issues so I didn't get a
good look at them. I would love to hear what the savage guys
thought about the Losi cause they have the experience and can do
the comparison more objectivele (not withstanding my first post on
this thread!). I didn't there was much in the speed difference.
Standard Losi springs seem a little soft but they do a good job.

husky

I thought the losi looked quite good. Some stiffer springs, an
underside skidplate, and some thicker A arms and it would be sweet. I
did notice some crunching when the brakes were applied, not sure if its
normal or not. The truck was a little on the slow side but i suspect
its just tuning. Love the suspension, but well have to see if it stands
the test of time, the savage already has.

And Skidds savage today wasn't tricked up or hopped up at all, it was
completly stock. Based on today stock savage vs stock losi - savage winshttps://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif. Ill upload the pics laterfor yahttps://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

Mini T. I figure all these trucks are pretty good. In the end though
you're gonna form an emotional attachement to your own or need to
find a way to justify all the $$$ you put into the one you got. https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif

Hey 'TDuck' I started with www.teamlosi.com and then just spent
ages trawling google and all the various links that came up. I read
heaps on the Genesis and LST from guys in the states who had
bought them and where pounding/breaking them.
Many of these were also savage owners looking for something new/
different. Quite a few converts to the LST I discovered.

Not saying that your savage isn't a top truck, but I was starting from
scratch.

i was in the car today, ready to go to knox!!!.. luky i didnt go there?... u all went kilsyth?.. i had no fuel!!! https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif.

i didnt see the crash or anything.. but it seems kinda weak to break
under those conditions.. (i really dont know how well both cars
"crunched"), but as seem by toiletducks crazy driving a few bashes

Go the Savage!

Even the most serious savage racer / basher , a mod on SC agrees, and opted out by getting rid of the troublesome LST.

REVREX

"Under those conditions"!!!
Let me put you straight on a couple of things Fire:
1. Both trucks were hammering. Pole does not hammer towards you
at same speed truck is doing. Result? Impact twice that of static
object.
2. The front chasis section of ANY truck is a better ipact point that an
oblique angle on the wheel/A-arm structure. Given the front of the
Losi hitting the wheel of the Savage… hhmm I wonder if it wouldn't
have been the same result but the other truck. No way of proving
this without a rematch. Are you up for that Skidd?? We'd be like a
couple of motorized remote control goats - butting heads to see who
is the strongest (biggest) goat!
3. I have read of Losi LST's busting A arms, cvd's and shock shafts
on not huge impacts. Before I crashed into Skidd i rammed into a
concrete culvert and was amazed it didn't bust an arm or shaft.
4. That's right! you didn't see the crash. Looks good from the
armchair though!!
5. Ooops I better go back and read my last post about getting
emotional in our loyalties to our investment! https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

Well it's fair to say that we all had a good laugh at the events of today... glad it was all in good humour as some people might have been annoyed at breaking their car like that on the first group outing. Well done on you restraint REVREX.

Now let me have my fun....

The Losi and it's owner turned up with the clear intention of showing the 2nd class savage and their owners just what a real truck can do. He spent time telling us how good it was... my losi is bigger than these savages, look at the size ofmy shocks, see how I have two steering servos, look at the size of my rotostart, mine has high and low range in the transmission, mine came with a JR XS3 radio, yada, yada, yada....

When it did get on the track it looked quote good, seemed to have enough grunt to drag it around the track, the numerous rolls I seen it seemed to land on it's wheels more often than the savage does...

OK I guess I'd better get the savage out there, I had only bought my spare truck... a savage 25 RTR which is completely stock with no mods at all. I figured that I didn't want to totally humiliate our newest crew member with my extended chassis, stainless steel TVP, high torque servo, RB modded picco super savage... after all, he seems like a nice bloke and we didn't want to scare him away.

After I done a few short laps to warm her up I put the body on and started some drifting in a large flat gravel area just below our drivers mound.... I started heading the savvy up to the drivers area... going pretty quick and who do I meet comming down the hill... our newest team member, as is standard protocol I moved left to allow us to pass and guess which way he moved?? To the right... BAM!!!

The impact left the savage standing and theLosey... err sorryLosi was left a sorry sightsitting on thre wheels with the disconected parts spinning in ever decreasing circles. Sort of like a scene from a Mad Max movie. Theresult was the savage totaled the Losi and ripped the whole front wheel right off, alsong with the associated suspension arms, shock mounts and dog bones.

To be fair, the savage was not completely unhurt. The engine did stall and I'm sure there in a new small scratch on the front bumper. https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

So I can see the headline now...
Losi and Savage go head to head!!
Savage 1 - Losi 0

LOL

Seriously though... it's great to see people like REVREX and Jected getting different stuff. The forum and our group can only benefit from the diversity the develops as other trucks start to get exposure at our GTGs.

Besides... us savage owners need someone to laugh at. https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

Ah, good to see everyone is friends! lol. It was a mean stack... it made me cringe! any car would have to break being hit like that in the wheel! actually surprisingly little damage, it just looked bad because there was a wheel rolling around on the ground afterwards!
I was quite impressed with the Losi... like everyone said - very soft suspension, but the way it rode was way cool! That crunching sound when braking is a sound i've heard coming from a few savages too.... i have a funny feeling that it's the spider gears, or maybe the pinion gear in the diff slipping.... plastic casings giving too much flex and big wheels putting a lot of extra torque through the driveline etc. It's not a good sound, that's for sure!
My car ran away from me twice and i still didn't brake anything! I'm quite proud of that! N.e.way, good day guys... Until next time https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

It actually was a good day... I've got the spare savage running really well. Pity REVREX didn't hang around to see it running. The standard S25 motor really isn't all that bad.

Must admit it was good to finally see the Losi in the flesh and of course being a fan of 'bigger is better' I like it because it's a bit bigger than a savage, but then the Genesis is much bigger! The thing that I'll need to sit back and watch is just how your two trucks handle the day to day rigours of bashing. We all need to get down to Knox... that's where we get some big air and hard landings. https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif

I tell you what, excluding Sat when I stuffed up with the tailshafts, I was a little hesitant on really pushing mine but after being down at Nunawading last week a couple of times and giving it to the genesis, it actually surprised me that nothing broke and the more the confidence grew the harder i pushed it.

The LST is not bad either. The 1st vid that REV put out didn't do it justice as the jumps didn't look that high on the vid, but when your there it is actually quite a big drop. And that landing on its backside and all it copped was a torn body.......impressive.

Nah it's fine. As I said earlier the shock shafts are hardened steel
and brittle (titanium ones on the way according to Losi). The A arms
are meant to bust and are vulnerable. I will glue and pin the servo
knuckle while I wait for a new one (US$6).
I have taken the opportunity to strip the front and rear ends off to
check diffs for grease (after your experiences) and will break open
the centre gearbox for a look.
First of many strip downs - no doubt.

So anyway this had been a bucket of fun tonight. Almost as much fun
taking the **** and being taken back as it was at the track.

i have a had a few trucks now - mostly Mad Force & RCX stuff - but I
have gotta say that the savage is a great truck at a great price with
loads of cheap parts and options and they go real hard.

looking forward to learning more from the guys on the forum and
playing together on the weekends.

Thanks guys!

Go for the Revo or TA MGT, that way we will be able to compare the newest stuff all in our little group.

[Edit Note:]

Of course, on a serious side (not that my suggestion above wasn't serious), getting the Losi would also be a good move. It is good to have two of the same truck in the family 'cos then the spares are common to eachother and it lessens the chances of being caught out without parts.

When you see our full day bashes it really is great that with 4 - 6 people bashing at the one place that someone in the group will almost always have the spare part you need.Edited by: Skidd

Losi, I actually think people will now think Losi as second best, once
you start an "aroma" it stays with the truck forever.

Now whenever I think about the Losi, I think about Rev's busted hanging wheel.

I wear my hanging wheel with pride!
A badge of honor for the newcomer.

Not so long ago I was racing with a buddy.
We both had Kysho Mad Force MT's.
His standard, mine RCX.
He lost signal and it hit the cement kerb flat out (about 40mph).
Man, his rig sprayed bent and broken bits over 3 sq metres.
it took us 20 minutes just to find all the bits.

It was so cool!! I was laughing fit to burst.
He was really not happy- and all the more at my delight in the
fountain of mauled MT remnants!
Today's incident was no big deal!

If you think Losi has an 'aroma' from that then your smelling
something else!

Not sure I should say what it is though! https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

care if there are Savages racing, especially Skidd, he has smelt Losi

I know how it feels when you break something so early on owning a brand
new expensive rc car. I broke my front dog bone in the 5th tank of my
Savage by slamming my rig into a metal fence at 40mph. It's heart
breaking stuff especially when back then I didn't know where to get
parts from.....

can wipe out anything at the track. Its strong (mine is starting to get
pretty beaten up).It has everything i could ever wish for and i'm so
glad i forked out the cash for it

Hey mini could you do a mini review on your TNX, I really am looking
for a new truck to play with my Savage and it looks the goods. Could
you tell me what things break often or is there any durability issues.
You had it for a while now and you know your trucks weakness, enlighten
us a little.

Pleople say you have to spend $$$ on a T-maxx to make it roadworthy,
geeze, what I have spent on my Savage....to make it road/race worthy is
also, quite substantial.

I still think that ALL the current generation monster truck engineering
is flawed. Maybe in the next 5 years we will start seeing some good
innovative ideas that come close to bulletproofing these hardcore
abused machines. Damn I will be 27 years old by then with 2 babies and
a mortgage. Yikes.....

TNX did pretty well at the Proline MAXX Challenge... 3 of them came 2nd/3rd/4th ahead of *all* the T-Maxxes!! https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

RE BIG BLOCKS: Small doesnt matter when you have the power to
weight ratio. I LOVE V8's but I drive a Subaru WRX Sti and can whip
any V8 with the power to weight advantage. https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif
That's why the maxx's & TNX's do so good competing against other
big block machines.

RE FLAWED TRUCK DESIGN: I'm not sure I agree with you MnB.
You've gotta make your truck so that something can give. I prefer
the look of machined metal A arms but will leave the 'plasticy'
looking one on my Losi because I'd rather snap a cheap A arm than
bend a metal one or, worse, transfer the force 'back up the chain'
into the chasis. As you know I too a big hit a the track on Sunday.
Was replacing the A arms last night and discovered the chasis
mounting hole slightly burred from the twisting force of the impact on
the front end at an angle. No big deal! But if the A arms handed been
designed to flex and break then there would have been much more
force to be dissapated in the chasis. It is unrealistic to run a 6-18 kilo
truck into a pole or tree and not have anything break!

Your arguement would be valid when comparing a little Subaru Impreza (compact sedan) to a Falcon (heavy taxi).

But there's not that much mass difference between a Savage and a T-Maxx/Revo/TNX. They're are both pretty heavy chassis, the size of the engine isn't a major part of car's mass.

An on-road 1/10 tourer with a 12 would move a lot faster than a monster truck due to much less mass.

But big blocks do make a lot more torque.

Hey guys - I tore the truck down last night and fixed it. Managed to
screw/glue the ball end on the steering crank is on the way. Replaced
broked shock shaft & A arms.

HUSKY I found the crunching noise under breaks (it also does it
under hard acceleration in reverse). The front diff housing was
cracked so that under the right pressure it is levering open and
allowing the crown wheel & pinion to disengage - hence the
ratchetting noise. No damage has been done - another case is on the
way.

TOILETDUCK Husky was right about the tuning. I leaned it out heaps
more. Trouble is now I am having trouble keeping it on 4 wheels.
Pops wheelies on the grass in first and sometimes when it grabs 2nd.
I have now completely shredded the rear of the body. I had better
fabricate a bigger rear bumper or add some wheelis bars! https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

Since it has made the noise from new, my guess is that it was always
cracked. Have spoken to Rob @ robsrchobbies.com and there will be

a temp repair while the parts ship.

Well what I'm saying... the comparison I'm making, is that: once there was acarproduced here in Australia, the Leyland P76,that was superior to most things around at the time. It had a lot of engineering advances that were new to the market and a lot of folk raved about how it would revolutionise the automotive scene.

Well like a lot of other people, I'm not really fussed about what all the hyped up reviews, expertsand very proud new owners have to say, I'll stick to my old faithful Holden (read Savage). It does me just fine, and whether or not the Losi goes the way of the P76.... only time will tell, but I know the savage will be here... with great support and parts availability for a long time to come yet.

LOL... so you can have all your engineering advances in the world, I'll stick to my boring old savage thanks..... Oh and if I do break it, I know that someone in the group will have a part for it. https://www.ausrc.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif
