Goin on a road trip.

I am taking my family for a holiday at the end of November for 17days. We want to check out the west as we have been up and down the coast and need a change.

We are going from our home in Singleton with camper trailer in tow behind our 4WD. We are heading to Parkes, to Bourke, to Menindee lakes and Broken Hill. But are unsure of where to head after that. We basically have plans to do a big loop from home, so basically Singleton, broken hill, Adelaide, Melbourne, Bathurst, and home. We know it'll be bloody hot out west so are looking for a couple a nice place along the coast to come home via to cool down.

Does anyone have any suggestions of where to visit and what to do?

Also after some advice on a GPS. I am after one that can have Longitude and Latitude points put into it so as to get you to a specific place on a map. As far as i have been told only Garmin GPS can do this. A TOMTOM would not be suitable for what we want to do with it as they are only any good around city's etc.

The great Australian bites always good if your going that far. Be careful driving at night, them roo's jump out at ya! We hit one at 110, bent the bull bar right back into the van.

This site would come in handy if you have a laptop, if not look up at the places you wont to visit and set the longitude and latitude in your garmin.

This ones worth a look to.

I reckon you'd find some great places to bash the baja

I just bought a Garmin 750. It seems like the goods for the job. Does all the latitude and longitude stuff and even though its a car GPS, it can be used for hiking. For example to find where your car was left after a day trek.

Got a camper trailer booked for the trip. Gunna buy one oneday but will be hiring a few over the next couple a years to see what we want in one first .

GW - When your looking at camper trailer stuff, check out this site,

http://myswag.org/forum/ It is an awesome community just like AUSRC, except for camper trailers! What those people dont know or have not tried or seen, aint worth knowing about!

I see you have now bought a GPS - but for future reference IMO, the best available units around for touring, 4wd'ing and overall country is HEMA, check em on the link below, They are pretty cool, and can map in all different formats, (topographical) etc and it does route plotting tracking and all that jazz....

As for your trip, I am jealous. Some mates just did a similar run in October but went north from Broken Hill, followed the Darling, did the Rodeo in Tibooburra, Cameron corner and returned through Bourke, Walgett and Moree etc. I missed that trip as I had "fishing commitments" on the Manning River for a couple of weeks! But if you get to BH and turn left, your plans sound good! Make sure you dont miss Victor Harbour, and well the great ocean rd, well its the great ocean rd. When you get past Melbourne, Wilsons Promontory national park has some of the best camp sites around!!!

Sorry for such a long winded response, but you triggered my other passion!! If you have not got one already, this book would be very helpful for your trip!!!

Safe travels my friend, have fun!

I must've skimmed your itinerary a bit...yep, +1 for the great ocean rd. I'm Victorian born and bred, and that is a great run.

if you go down to Queenscliff (nice little bakery there!), there is also a ferry across to Sorrento I think, and you'll get to see the 'beachy' side of Port Phillip Bay - Rosebud, Rye, etc. and even on to Mornington. If you've got time and can be bothered, then there's even Phillip Island where the kids will love the penguins. I haven't actually been there myself, but I know those who have and have loved it.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Those websites are real helpfull to Cammo

I been talkin to a few blokes at work about the trip and i mentioned to some of em that i absolutely love MAD MAX and wanted to know where some of it was filmed so i could go there and check it out.

Turns out a bit of it was filmed at Silverton which is right near broken hill!. Does anyone else know anything about where MAD MAX was filmed and what i could look at while i am out on this road trip?
