Novarossi Engines - Discussion and Support Thread

Hey guys,

I've made this thread so all you Nova owners can have a specific place to come to talk about your engines, and also a place where you can help each other out when it comes to technical support. My main focus is these 2009 buggy/truggy engines - Plus 4 and Toro Nero, however feel free to discuss any engine in the Novarossi line.

Keep the thread on topic and as clean as possible, so hopefully as it grows it will become a massive knowledge and information base for anyone looking to purchase one of these great motors.

For reference, here is my setup -

Novarossi Plus 4 2009 engine
Novarossi 9901 pipe with 41020 manifold
Turbo plugs, Novarossi #6's

I guess everyone has just seen them perform over the course of this year with some outstanding results.

I for one will be posting as much information as I can from trackside experience once I get out there with mine.

Anfo are you still going to run MM Amain fuel through the Novas? It would be good to hear your experience with this combination.

Yep Turbo head with the Nova #6 plugs as per Ari's instruction. So far so good

Standard shimming for now, I'll get onto that later after some more fuel has been through it.

Were you not using 'GO' motors, and now Novas?

Thats what I meant about whoever is supplying them :-)

OK, the following is the run-in procedure I was told to try and can be used by anyone if you're not sure what to do. I know everyone has their own ''thing'' when it comes to run-in, but I'm always open to new methods especially with a brand I haven't run before. So far so good for me -

1. As you do, make sure the engine is nice and lubed so you don't get a ''dry start''. Upon inspection I noticed the Nova's are lubed up quite well, however a couple of drops of after run or even fuel won't hurt

2. Heat up the engine. It's hard to say how hot I heated mine as this part of the procedure I didn't have a temp gun handy, however I used one later on. I can say it was quite hot to touch the top of the head though

3. Crank it over and idle it through 2 tanks. I did one tank on one day and another the next, if you're going to let it cool between tanks make sure you HEAT IT UP AGAIN BEFORE STARTING. It's probably better/easier to idle them through one after the other without shutting it down, however as long as you get heat in there it shouldn't matter too much. You may find the engines are a little too rich out of the box (like me). Due to the fact I read a couple of articles on the internet with people saying the same thing, I didn't hesitate to give it 1/8 of a turn in on the bottom end. This made it idle like a dream Now in terms of temp you want it idling at between 80 - 90 degrees Celcius. This is where I used a gun, and the temp was spot on during both tanks. After heating and starting it, I left it on the starter box outside in the sun (which has been very warm the last couple of days) and I believe this helped the engine maintain some of it's heat. Don't hesitate to use foil or a spray can lid if you find it's not staying up to temp.

4. You now want about 6 - 8 tanks through of very calm and slow throttle around the street with load on (so driving basically) and a temp between 100 - 110 degrees Celcius. Try to do 2 continuous tanks at a time. You may lean the engine off slighty as the tanks go on to get a better response out of the throttle and get more heat in. I'll update with specifics on this part after I've finished running mine in.

5. You want about 4 litres through the engine before you give it a ''race'' tune (that's not to say you can't race it, they will perform extremely well without leaning them excessively). Basically I'd say have about 2 litres through at least before giving it a serious attempt on the track, running on the safe side.

6. Go out and kick ass

VERY IMPORTANT - MAKE SURE BETWEEN TANKS THAT YOU MOVE THE PISTON DOWN TO BOTTOM DEAD CENTRE - YOU WANT THE PISTON AS LOW AS IT CAN GO WITH THE ROD IN THE VERTICAL POSITION. This will allow the sleeve to contract properly while cooling down. If the piston gets in the way it can stop this from happening and as a result you have just lost a load of pinch.

Nice thread Anfo, great write up on the run in.

Couple of important points to add:

When in between tanks, as soon as you have run out of fuel and you are letting the engine cool down, make sure your piston is not halfway up the liner... always want it at the bottom so to speak.

Getting the engine up to temp is very important when idling. 80 minimum 90 is perfect, if you are having issues with getting the temp up, like Anfo said use a spray paint lid (cut the centre out), also to help with restarts you can put a small hole in the top for your glowie. You can also wrap the head with foil if you dont have a Spray Lid. When cruising/driving make sure you are between 100-110 you ahouldnt need the lid at this stage, once you get a few litres on it 115-120 Race temps are fine, anything above 130 can be a bit much.

All Temp readings are Degrees Celcius.

Guys just a quick question on Novarossi's what would a second hand 528 Jim hottinger modded motor be worth. Very little use!

Midnight - Good to hear you are happy, 14 mins is awesome, im getting 13 out of mine.

Baja Rocks - Sure you can use the same method, it will work fine. Just be sure not to lean it off too much too quickly, Onroad has more grip/more load, its easier to hurt the engines this way.

Dvestate - I think he was trying to point out he is not a sponsored driver.
